What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign that was coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. In astrology it describes your first impression: how you come across, your style, and the way you meet new situations.
Your Sun sign is who you are at the core and your Moon sign is how you feel. Your rising sign is the front door, so people often recognise you by it first.
Why your birth time matters
The whole zodiac rises over the horizon once a day, so a new sign comes up about every two hours. Two people born on the same day in the same city can have completely different rising signs. Use the time on your birth certificate if you can. If your ascendant falls in the first or last two degrees of a sign, the calculator tells you, because a few minutes either way could change it.
The twelve rising signs
A one-line first impression for each. Your result above goes deeper, and your chart ruler (the planet that rules your rising sign) adds more.
- Aries rising: direct, quick, up for a challenge.
- Taurus rising: calm, steady, easy to be around.
- Gemini rising: curious, chatty, quick.
- Cancer rising: warm, protective, guarded at first.
- Leo rising: confident, bright, hard to miss.
- Virgo rising: thoughtful, neat, helpful.
- Libra rising: charming, polite, stylish.
- Scorpio rising: intense, private, magnetic.
- Sagittarius rising: open, funny, restless.
- Capricorn rising: composed, capable, serious.
- Aquarius rising: friendly but a bit unusual.
- Pisces rising: gentle, dreamy, kind.
How the calculation works
We find the local sidereal time for your birth moment and place, then the point of the zodiac on the eastern horizon, using the standard ascendant formula and the open-source astronomy-engine library. This is the tropical zodiac of Western astrology; Vedic (sidereal) astrology places signs about 24° earlier, so a Vedic ascendant is often one sign back.
