Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign. Enter your birth details to find it, plus the sign and house it sits in.
What is a chart ruler?
Your chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign (ascendant). Because the ascendant describes how you meet the world, its ruling planet acts like the captain of your whole chart: its sign and house show where your energy naturally wants to go.
Your rising sign changes about every two hours, so you need a birth time, even a rough one, to find your chart ruler.
Rising signs and their rulers
Traditional astrology uses the seven visible planets. Modern astrologers also give Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces a second, outer-planet ruler; we show both.
Aries rising: Mars
Taurus rising: Venus
Gemini rising: Mercury
Cancer rising: the Moon
Leo rising: the Sun
Virgo rising: Mercury
Libra rising: Venus
Scorpio rising: Mars (modern: Pluto)
Sagittarius rising: Jupiter
Capricorn rising: Saturn
Aquarius rising: Saturn (modern: Uranus)
Pisces rising: Jupiter (modern: Neptune)
How to read your chart ruler
Start with three things: the planet itself (what kind of energy leads), the sign it is in (how it expresses itself) and the house it sits in (the area of life it pulls you toward). A Venus chart ruler in the 10th house, for example, points toward a career shaped by beauty, people or diplomacy.
FAQ
Questions people ask
How do I find my chart ruler?
Enter your birth date, time and place above. The calculator works out your rising sign, finds the planet that rules it, and shows that planet’s sign and house.
Why do I need my birth time?
The rising sign moves through all twelve signs in a day, about one every two hours. Without a time the chart ruler can’t be known; a rough time is better than none.
What if my rising sign has two rulers?
For Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces rising we show the traditional ruler first and the modern co-ruler underneath. Many astrologers read both.
Is the chart ruler the same as the dominant planet?
They overlap but are not the same. The chart ruler is fixed by your rising sign; the dominant planet is whichever planet scores highest overall. Try the dominant planet calculator to compare.
Note. Astrology is a reflective tradition, not a science. Positions are calculated with the open-source astronomy-engine library (tropical zodiac, whole-sign houses); your birth data stays in your browser.
