What is a dominant planet?
Your dominant planet is the planet with the most influence in your birth chart. Astrologers find it by adding up how strongly each planet is placed: whether it rules your rising sign, sits close to an angle of the chart, is in a sign it rules, or makes tight aspects to your Sun, Moon and ascendant.
Two people with the same Sun sign can feel completely different because a different planet dominates each chart. A Venus-dominant Leo and a Saturn-dominant Leo will not walk into a room the same way.
How this calculator scores your planets
There is no single official formula, so we show ours and the reasons behind every point. Tap a planet in your top five to see exactly where its score came from.
- Chart ruler: the planet that rules your rising sign, +4 (modern co-ruler for Scorpio, Aquarius or Pisces rising, +2).
- Near an angle: within 8° of the ascendant or midheaven, +3.
- Angular house: in the 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house (whole-sign houses), +2.
- Dignity: in its own sign +3, exalted +2.
- Rulership: +1 for each other planet sitting in a sign it rules.
- Aspects: +1 for each tight aspect (within 6°) to the Sun, Moon or ascendant. The Sun and Moon start with +1 as luminaries.
What each dominant planet means
Use these as starting points. Your full chart, especially the sign and house of your dominant planet, adds the detail.
- ☉ Sun: identity, leadership, a need to be seen.
- ☽ Moon: feeling, care, sensitivity to mood and home.
- ☿ Mercury: ideas, words, curiosity, quick thinking.
- ♀ Venus: love, beauty, harmony and pleasure.
- ♂ Mars: drive, courage, competition, action.
- ♃ Jupiter: growth, optimism, travel and meaning.
- ♄ Saturn: structure, discipline, responsibility, patience.
- ♅ Uranus: originality, independence, sudden change.
- ♆ Neptune: imagination, empathy, dreams and art.
- ♇ Pluto: intensity, depth, power and transformation.
Why does my result differ from other calculators?
Each site weighs things differently: some count Uranus, Neptune and Pluto less, some use Placidus houses instead of whole signs, and some add midpoints or fixed stars. If two planets are within a point or two of each other here, treat both as dominant. A wrong birth time changes the rising sign and can change the answer, so use the time on your birth certificate if you can.
