Note. For self-reflection. A short online test is not a clinical or hiring assessment. Items from the public-domain International Personality Item Pool (ipip.ori.org).

How it works

Three steps, 4 minutes.

  1. 1

    Rate twenty statements

Each one describes a way people behave. Say how accurately it describes you now, compared with people you know of your age.

  2. 2

    We average each trait

Four statements belong to each of the five traits, some worded the opposite way. Each trait gets a score from 1 to 5.

  3. 3

    See all five

Your result page opens on your strongest trait and shows where you sit on all five, from low to high.

FAQ

Questions people ask

What are the Big Five personality traits?
Openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism, often remembered as OCEAN. They are the most widely used model of personality in psychology research.
Where do the questions come from?
They are the 20-item Mini-IPIP (Donnellan and colleagues, 2006), drawn from the International Personality Item Pool, which is in the public domain. We reworded them to start with “I”.
How is the Big Five different from MBTI or 16-type tests?
Type tests sort you into one of 16 boxes. The Big Five measures five traits on a scale, so two people with the same strongest trait can still differ a lot on the other four. Research uses the Big Five far more often.
How accurate is a 20-question Big Five test?
Short versions like the Mini-IPIP correlate well with longer ones for each trait, but with four items per trait any single score is rough. Treat “middle” scores as middle, and retake it another day if a result surprises you.
Is a high neuroticism score bad?
No. It means you feel negative emotions more often or more strongly. It is a normal personality trait, not a mental health diagnosis.
Is it free?
Yes. No email, no account and no paywall. Your answers are scored in your browser and never sent to us.
